Difference between THPC-U and THPS-U (Performance & Application)
THPC-U,CAS,27104-30-9 and THPS-U,CAS,63502-25-0, are both tetrakis hydroxymethyl phosphonium urea precondensate flame retardants for textiles, while their core difference is the anion component. THPC-U adopts chloride anion, whereas THPS-U adopts sulfate anion, which leads to obvious differences in performance and application scenarios.
Performance difference
THPC-U has higher crosslinking reactivity and outstanding washing durability. It can maintain stable flame retardancy after 30 to 50 times of industrial washing, showing excellent endurance on cellulosic fabrics. However, due to the contained chloride ions, THPC-U may cause corrosion to metal finishing equipment during high-temperature curing processes. It also has relatively stronger acidity, which may cause slight fabric strength loss if the processing pH is not well controlled. In addition, THPC-U has a relatively higher free formaldehyde content and lower production cost.
THPS-U features sulfate anion and is completely chloride-free. It causes almost no metal equipment corrosion and brings milder acidity during finishing, resulting in minimal fabric strength loss and better fabric hand feel compared with THPC-U. Its free formaldehyde level is lower and more environmentally friendly. In terms of washing fastness, THPS-U shows good durable performance but is slightly inferior to THPC-U. Meanwhile, its production cost is higher than THPC-U.
Application difference
THPC-U is mainly applied to durable flame retardant finishing of pure cotton, rayon and linen cellulose fabrics through the classic ammonia curing process. It is widely used for manufacturing flame retardant protective workwear, military textiles, furniture upholstery and curtain fabrics. It is more suitable for factories with low requirements for equipment corrosion resistance and product chloride restriction.
THPS-U is applicable to cotton fabrics and cotton-polyester blended CVC fabrics. Benefiting from chloride-free and low-corrosion characteristics, it is the preferred product for textile factories with strict equipment anti-corrosion standards. It fully meets chlorine-free environmental specifications and is widely used in high-standard scenarios such as home textiles, children’s textiles and automotive interior fabrics. It can also be used for partial wood flame retardant treatment.
