Basic Characteristics
Magnesium silicate is a stable inorganic compound composed of magnesium oxide and silicon dioxide with adjustable water content. The product appears as fine white or off-white powder without odor and taste, and contains no granular impurities. It is practically insoluble in water ethanol and ether, and can only be decomposed by strong inorganic acid. The pH value of its ten percent water suspension ranges from 7.0 to 10.8. This product features slight hygroscopicity, excellent chemical inertness, large specific surface area and porous structure, which endows it with good adsorption performance and stable physical and chemical properties under conventional storage and use conditions.
Main Applications
In the food industry, magnesium silicate serves as a high-efficiency anti-caking agent. It is widely used in powdered food, edible salt, seasoning powder and milk powder to prevent product agglomeration caused by moisture absorption. It also acts as a processing aid and adsorbent, applied in edible oil refining for decolorization and removal of soap stock and miscellaneous impurities. Besides, it can be used as polishing and anti-stick powder for candy and chewing gum products.
In the pharmaceutical industry, it is a common auxiliary material for tablet production. It can be used as glidant and flow improver to improve the fluidity of medicinal powder and avoid sticking to production molds during tableting. Meanwhile, it is also an important raw material for oral antacid preparations for relieving stomach discomfort.
In industrial and chemical fields, magnesium silicate is a high-efficiency adsorbent suitable for column chromatography separation, as well as adsorption and purification of lipids and organic impurities. It can be used as a functional filling material for rubber, plastic, coating, ceramic and papermaking industries. In addition, it can be applied as filter aid and deodorant for industrial liquid refining processing.
