1. Basic Introduction

Calcium hypophosphite, also called calcium phosphinate, molecular weight 170.06. It is an inorganic hypophosphite white crystalline powder, HS code: 28351000.00, EINECS: 232-190-8. It is manufactured via reaction of slaked lime and yellow phosphorus, widely applied in flame retardancy, metal surface treatment, feed nutrition and pharmaceutical industries.

2. Physical & Chemical Properties

Physical Properties

  1. Appearance: White monoclinic crystalline powder, odorless, slight bitter taste, high whiteness ≥96

  2. Solubility: Soluble in water (16.7g/100g water at 25°C), slightly soluble in glycerol, completely insoluble in ethanol and organic solvents

  3. Density: 1.634 g/cm³; aqueous solution weak acid, pH 5.0–7.0 (100g/L solution)

  4. Thermal stability: Initial decomposition temperature ~300–350℃; purity standard ≥98.0% industrial grade

Chemical Properties

  1. Strong reducing property: Hypophosphite anion carries reducing activity, far more stable than sodium hypophosphite under normal temperature, incompatible with strong oxidants

  2. Thermal decomposition characteristic: When heated above 300℃, it decomposes to release flammable phosphine (\(PH_3\)) and calcium polyphosphate residues

  3. Halogen-free structure: Contains no bromine/chlorine; no toxic dioxin or hydrogen halide released during combustion, compliant with RoHS & REACH regulations

  4. High phosphorus content: Up to 32.6% phosphorus element, high flame-retardant efficiency per unit mass

3. Core Applications (Classified by Industry)

① Halogen-free Flame Retardant (Main Polymer Application)

  • Mechanism: Dual-phase flame suppression

    1. Gas phase: Releases phosphorus free radicals to quench H·/OH· radicals and cut off combustion chain reaction;

    2. Condensed phase: Forms dense calcium phosphate char layer on plastic surface to isolate oxygen and heat transfer

  • Applicable materials: PA6/PA66, PBT, PET, epoxy resin, rubber, cable plastic, engineering plastics for electronics

  • Advantages: Low smoke, low toxicity, good compatibility with polymer matrix, can reach UL94 V-0 rating with low addition ratio

② Electroless Nickel Plating Additive (Key Industrial Usage)

  1. Acts as primary reducing agent: Provides electrons to reduce nickel ions to uniform Ni-P alloy coating without external power supply

  2. Bath stabilizer: Suppresses accumulation of phosphite byproducts, extends plating liquid service life, reduces precipitation

  3. Coating performance: Produces hard, wear-resistant, anti-corrosion nickel-phosphorus layer for auto parts, electronic circuit boards, aerospace precision components
