Melamine Cyanurate (MCA)

Melamine cyanurate (MCA) ,CAS:37640-57-6,is a salt formed by melamine and cyanuric acid in a 1:1 molar ratio. It is widely used as a halogen-free flame retardant in polymers such as nylon, polyesters, and polypropylene due to its ability to promote char formation and release inert gases upon decomposition.

Basic Information:

- Chemical Formula: C₃H6N6  C₃H₃N₃O₃

- Molecular Weight: 255.19 g/mol

- Appearance: White crystalline powder

- Decomposition Temperature: ~350°C

- Solubility: Insoluble in water and most organic solvents.

Applications:

- Flame Retardant: Used in plastics, rubber, and coatings.

- Synergistic Effects: Often combined with other flame retardants (e.g., metal oxides) for enhanced performance.

Safety & Toxicity:

- Low toxicity but may release hazardous gases (e.g., ammonia, nitrogen oxides) upon thermal decomposition.

- Linked to kidney damage in cases of ingestion (historically associated with food adulteration scandals).

Regulatory Status:

- Approved for flame retardant use under REACH (EU) and other regulations when properly handled.

- Banned in food-related applications due to past misuse.

Handling & Storage:

- Store in a cool, dry place away from strong acids/bases.

- Use PPE (gloves, mask) to avoid inhalation or skin contact.
