Engineering Plastic Modification (Largest segment, >40%)
Used in PA, PP, PC/ABS, PBT, etc., as a synergist for brominated flame retardants to partially replace antimony trioxide. Rising demand comes from new energy vehicle housings, battery pack casings, 5G base station enclosures and connectors. Ultra-fine / nano-grade zinc borate commands a premium here.
Wire & Cable Compounds (2nd largest, ~22%)
Applied in XLPE, EVA low-smoke halogen-free cables, PV DC cables, NEV high-voltage harnesses and rail transit cables. It delivers smoke suppression, anti-dripping and arc resistance, supported by stricter national standards.
Rubber Products (~15%)
EPDM, neoprene, fire-resistant seals, hoses and conveyor belts.
Intumescent Fireproof & Anti-corrosion Coatings (~12%)
Steel structure fire retardant coatings, anti-corrosion primers for char formation. Minor uses include ceramic glazes, wood preservation and textile flame retardancy.
Others: electronic potting adhesives, tapes, fiberglass panels, etc.
Shift to halogen-free formulations & high antimony prices: Zinc borate reduces antimony and bromine dosage. Stricter regulations including EU REACH and domestic cable/automotive flame retardant standards push adoption of low-smoke, low-toxic materials.
Strong pull from new energy: PV cables, NEV high-voltage wiring and battery-related flame-retardant plastics are the key incremental markets, followed by 5G components.
Industrial transfer to Southeast Asia & India: Local cable and rubber capacity expansion supports rising export volumes, and Southeast Asia is the top export destination for Chinese suppliers.
⚠️ Constraints & Risks
It only acts as a synergist and cannot work as a standalone primary flame retardant. Its demand relies on ATH, MDH, phosphorus or bromine systems, limiting standalone expansion ceiling.
Boron ore raw material price volatility; fierce price competition for standard coarse powder with thin margins. High-end grades require tight control on particle size, purity and heavy metal (Pb, Fe) with rising REACH / RoHS compliance requirements.
Cyclicality of rubber & plastics: Weak real estate and conventional cable demand drag traditional consumption, partially offset by new energy business.
Standard industrial grade (3.5-hydrate, coarse powder): Large volume, low price, used in ordinary cables, plastics and coatings, highly competitive.
Ultra-fine / nano zinc borate: Good dispersion for electronics, high-end modified plastics and low-smoke cables, faster growth and higher margin.
Anhydrous zinc borate: Withstands processing temperature above 280°C for high-temperature engineering plastics and special compounds; low volume, high unit price.
China: World’s largest producer and consumer. Big domestic consumption plus bulk exports to Southeast Asia, India, Turkey and the Middle East.
Europe & America: Stable total demand, favoring high-purity, low-heavy-metal grades with higher price tolerance but strict certification thresholds.
Southeast Asia: Fast-growing market with continuous cable & rubber plant investment, the primary export market for Chinese zinc borate.
